Our experts alert you to the risks and consequences of low temperatures on your hydraulic installations. Hydraulic equipment, from the smallest to the largest units, are all sensitive to cold. All equipment is put to the test during this winter period, especially liquids such as oils.
Indeed, the viscosity of oils reacts to the coldn.
BUT WHAT IS VISCOSITY ?
This is the resistance to the flow of a fluid. The SI unit is m2/s, but it is indicated in centistoke Cst (46Cts, 32Cts…) on your hydraulic oil can.
Remember that this value corresponds to the viscosity of your oil at 40°C.
We can see that viscosity and temperature are directly linked. The lower the temperature, the higher the viscosity, and the more the oil will resist moving. As they say, « cold thickens oil ».
In the documentation of the manufacturers of hydraulic components, you will find their operational viscosity often between 15 and 250Cst depending on the application.

Nos experts en hydraulique ont pu identifier une augmentation de la consommation de filtre causée par la viscosité anormalement élevée des huiles, ce qui à déclencher les indicateurs de colmatage.

A few years ago, Christophe MOUCHE, a hydraulic expert, was contacted by a rail transport company that was no longer able to lower the tipper from their wagons. They were beyond the polar circle. The oil had congealed in the foot of the cylinder. Even with a heater in the hydraulic power plant to keep the oil at the right temperature, the viscosity of the oil had changed in the hydraulic system. Our hydraulic expert advised them to take a simple fan heater and direct it to the cylinder foot at the connection. The problem was solved.
